NELA Competition Team
The NELA Gymnastics Team competes in the USA Gymnastics Organization and Xcel Program along with the National Gymnastics Association. We strive to be the best gym in Northeast Louisiana while maintaining a healthy balance between home, school, and gym life. We are proud to practice the fewest number of hours at each sanctioned level and continue to place on the top of the leader board. Our goal is to teach our gymnasts to love gymnastics and put 100% effort in every minute of practice. This home/school/life balance allow our gymnasts to remain happy and healthy.
Our competitive gymnastics team is designed for dedicated athletes who are ready to take their skills to the next level. Under the guidance of experienced coaches, team members train in a structured, supportive environment that emphasizes strength, discipline, and personal growth. We compete in USAG and NGA- sanctioned events throughout the season, giving athletes the opportunity to showcase their talent, build confidence, and form lasting friendships. Tryouts or coach evaluations are required for placement.

Meet our Coaches:
Erin Word (Right): Erin Word is the founder of NELA Gymnastics and Cheer, established in May 2011. Her journey in gymnastics began at the age of three and what started as a childhood passion has evolved into a fulfilling and successful career dedicated to youth development and athletic excellence.
With years of experience both as a gymnast and coach, Erin has created a nurturing and disciplined environment where athletes can grow in skill, confidence, and character. Her commitment to empowering young athletes is at the heart of NELA’s mission and success.
Samantha Hillman-Cook (Left): Samantha Hillman-Cook is the owner of CGA Tumble Cubs and the head coach of the competitive gymnastics team/partner at NELA Gymnastics in Bastrop, Louisiana. With over 15 years of personal experience as a competitive gymnast, and 9 years of coaching expertise, Samantha brings a deep passion and a strong technical foundation to every athlete she mentors.
In August 2021, she earned her certification through the National Association of Women’s Gymnastics Judges, further advancing her commitment to excellence and integrity in the sport. Samantha is also a proud alumna of Louisiana Tech University, where she graduated in November 2021 with a Bachelor’s degree in English and minors in History and Psychology.
Following a year of teaching 4th grade at Baskin School during the 2021-2022 academic year, Samantha made the intentional decision to return to her true calling- gymnastics. Her heart has always been in the gym, and she remains devoted to inspiring young athletes through positive coaching and a deep love for the sport.
